Can carbon steel rust?

First, we should know the define of rust, it is a reddish-brown oxide formed by the reaction of iron and oxygen under moisture conditions.

Carbon Steel is widely used in every field of daily life due to its advantages such as low production costs and good processability, but the iron in carbon steel makes it rusty easily. Compared with stainless steel, the carbon steel lacks chromium and can not fome an anti oxidation protective  layer, so it is more prone to rust.

Carbon steel has a widely use, so to avoid certain potential safety hazards, the possibility of carbon steel rusting should be minimized as soon as possible. In daily maintenance of carbon steel, it should be kept clean, the surface of carbon steel should be cleaned regularly to remove the dust, grease and other contaminants. Oil and anti-rust paint should be applied to the surface of carbon steel, the carbon steel should be stored in dry and well-ventilated environment, and avoid damp and high-salt environments.

Even if carbon steel rusts due to improper maintenance or inevitable circumstance, rust removal operation can be relied on some method, including mechanical method, chemical method and professional rust-removal operation. The mechanical method can be used to remove the rust through high-pressure sandblasting, grinding and wire brushing. Chemical methods involve using.

substances such as rust removers and acids to convert rust into stable compounds or dissolve it. If there are large area of rust spots that can not be treated, professional equipment and operations should be used for rust removal.

All carbon steel from DONGTE Steel undergoes surface coating treatment before leaving the factory, adopting a rust-resistant coating technology. Compared with ordinary carbon steel, it can be stored for a longer time and is of higher quality. If you are interested in purchasing carbon steel, please contact us.
